Banned Book Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the right to read whatever you please whenever you want.Believe it or not, there are many books considered classics nowadays that were once banned for several reasons.
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley was banned both in Ireland and Australia.It is one of my favourite dystopian novels.
The Diary of Anne Frank was banned in Lebanon. This book should be read in every school in the world.
1984 by George Orwell was banned in the Soviet Union. Another dystopian classic.
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury was banned from several schools in the USA.This is really funny, if you have read the book you will understand why and if you haven't don't wait any longer.
Not Without my Daughter by Betty Mahmoody was banned in Iran. Both the book and the film show how difficult life can be for women in certain countries.
The Color Purple by Alice Walker was banned in some parts of the USA. Women's hard life again.
A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway was banned in some cities of the USA. A classic.

I read this list once. You have to imagine what kind of criteria the banners have followed. All types of censorhips say a lot more about the censor`s tortured minds than about the censored object. In most cases people don´t perceive nothing unusual in a book or a movie until someone tells you not to read it. In fact, a book (or anything else) gains popularity by being banned. The best way to cope with diversity and dislike is normality, but unfortunately in many countries people are forced to live their lives in all ways but normal.
